''You are in Uncle Weng Fatt's room.'' You crouch down beside the bed, inspecting the space under. It looks like it hasn’t been touched in years - pulling out one of the boxes sends a cloud of dust up into the open. You brush over the top gingerly. The box is labelled somewhat messily. The marker ink has nearly faded, but you can still make out the words scrawled thickly over the top: “W.F. old things” Inside lie scraps of paper, a broken pen, and what looks like an old MRT ticket stub. Current Location: Old Jurong Railway Line Bridge Across these trails, you have been following fragments of memories from Uncle Weng Fatt’s diaries. Together, they point to something easy to overlook: the people closest to us often carry entire stories we never hear. Not because they are dramatic, but because they were private. Unfinished. Sometimes quietly painful. Sometimes simply never asked about. A place keeps the trace of a person in small ways: a counter they always leaned on, a table they always chose, a path they always took. The trace fades only when they stop coming or when the place itself is gone. That is why collecting these memories matters. Not to chase nostalgia, but to hold what would otherwise disappear. If this trail made you think of someone in your own life, consider starting small: Ask about a place they used to go often and why. Ask who they spent time with after school, after work, after dinner. Ask what they miss that they never mention. You do not need a perfect story. Only the willingness to notice, and to hold on to it.
